Qualifying as an Instructor

We are able to offer a training program for those wishing to qualify as Approved Driving Instructors.

There is a three-part qualifying process.

Instructor Training Part 1

Part 1 is a theory test similar to that taken by learner drivers. You will need to sit a 100 question test, divided into four modules, and you must score at least 80% in each module and an overall mark of 85%.

Instructor Training Part 2

Part 2 is an advanced driving test lasting approximately 1.5 hours. This will be carried out by a Driving Standards Agency examiner (supervising examiner/ADI).

Instructor Training Part 3

Part 3 is a test of instructional ability, and you will need to show that you can instruct at various levels e.g. novice learner and learner to Ttest standard. This test is also carried out by a DSA SE/ADI who will role-play a learner driver.

You may only attempt each part of the qualifying test three times, so thorough preparation is essential. You have to pass the part 3 test of instructional ability within two years of passing part 1.
