Vehicle Adaptations
Vehicle Adaptations
Here at Freedom Driver Training we have a selection of vehicles with different adaptations, Including some that can be fitted to vehicles with manual transmission. We work with a number of local suppliers and can give you advice on which adaptations would best suit your needs and how to go about getting your own vehicle adapted.
Pull /Push hand controls
Suitable for some people with a both leg
disability - these hand controls
effectively replace the need to operate foot
pedals. We have a vehicle fitted with a right
hand operated single combined push-pull lever
(with integrated indicator switch).
This, used in combination with a steering ball
and Secondary control unit, will give you full
control of the car.
Over-ring Accelerator
This is an alternative to the pull push accelerator
and keeps both hands on the steering wheel,
therefore steering is done in the
conventional way.
This solution is often better for people with
reduce leg function that may have a weakness
or discomfort in the back or neck area.
Left Foot Accelerator
This pedal can be flipped up or down as and
when required, it allows people with reduced
function of their right leg / foot (or for those
where this limb has been amputated), to drive
using the left foot.
This adaptation does not suit everyone and often
takes the longest to adjust to, but with the
right support and training anything is possible.
Wireless secondary control unit
This is an electronic device that is fitted onto the
steering wheel and enables the user to both
steer and operate the secondary controls
(lights windscreen wipers etc.) safely with
the use of only one hand.
Pedal Extensions
These are simply pedals that extend to aid
people of short stature to reach the foot pedals,
they can be fitted to any vehicle (Manual
or automatic) and are often used in conjunction
with additional seating modifications.
